Network FAQ

Answer:

Why I can’t access websites? First you need to check whether you Internet connection is up and also you computer must be connected to Internet properly. You can also take a look on how to make use of ping to troubleshoot network problem.

Also incorrect firewall configuration on router or the computer (Windows firewall, antivirus firewall, etc) can prevent you from access to websites, so you can just temporary disable it until you have solved this problem.

If you can ping the IP address of website but just cannot access the website, then most probably there is URL/domain name resolving issue. Use nslookup in command prompt (cmd.exe) to try resolving the URL/domain name, if it fails then you can try to use the following free DNS servers

Answer:

ust wonder why cannot access Internet with good wireless signal strength on wireless network? Actually, connected to wireless network and having good wireless signal strength doesn’t confirm you can access Internet, you should type following command in command prompt (cmd.exe) to make sure your computer have correct IP, netmask, gateway and DNS servers configured. If not correct, you won't be able to access Internet.

ipconfig/all

If you can ping the network gateway but fail to access any website, most probably you have domain/URL resolving problem. You should check whether you have correct DNS servers configured. If not, you can try following free DNS servers

Answer:

Normally you are required to configure LAN and WAN (Internet) IP settings on home router, but you might wonder why?

The WAN (Internet) IP is used by your home router to communicate to Internet servers via Cable/DSL modem, whereas the LAN IP is acted as gateway IP on your home network, so that other computers can set the router's LAN IP as gateway IP and access to Internet via router. Usually the LAN IP is private IP (cannot be used on Internet), such as 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x. Then how can the home computer with private LAN IP access to Internet? Ha.. Because there is built-in NAT (Network Address Translation) on router that will translate the computer’s LAN IP to WAN Internet IP when accessing to Internet.
